About This Course

The Baroque style, which had its beginnings in Rome, Italy, eventually spread from Italy through Europe to England. Characterized by its dynamic and dramatic energy, the style adapted to unique geographic regions and patronage as it spread internationally. In this course, we begin with Louis XIV, the Sun King, the absolute ruler of France and the builder of the Palace of Versailles. From there, we travel to the Dutch Republic to the rise of the open art market resulting in an explosion of styles. Our last stop is England where the Baroque style arrives to dominate court portraiture and plays a central role in the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire of 1666. This course uses the Hybrid format which allows students to participate remotely and/or in the classroom. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for the duration of the course.
