About This Course
Join us as we continue our exploration of pre-Code movies. In this course, we screen films made during the pre-Code era, 1930-1934, when criminal activities, adultery, alcohol consumption, prostitution, pre-marital sex, and other behaviors were boldly depicted in film, often without consequences. In 1934, the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 (Hays Code) was finally enforced, dramatically altering the content of U.S. motion pictures by putting an end to the depiction of behavior considered unethical and immoral. That year also saw the end of Prohibition. We watch Night Nutse (1931), Trouble in Paradise (1932), Employees' Entrance (1933), Three on a Match (1932), and Baby Face (1933). See young Clark Gable and up-and-coming Barbara Stanwyck. Watch pre-Code king Warren William. Learn why these films are important even and especially today.
